Knowledge for victims

What is a vehicle assessment — and when do you need an expert?

A vehicle assessment is the independent expert evaluation of a vehicle after an accident, for valuation purposes or in disputes with insurers. It serves as legally valid proof of damage amount, repair costs, diminished value and replacement value.

When is your own damage report worth it?

From a damage amount of around €1,000 (minor damage threshold) a full report is worth it. It documents the diminished value of your vehicle, determines replacement and residual value and secures full compensation. A simple workshop estimate does not cover these points.

What types of vehicle assessments exist?

  • Damage report: After accidents — repair costs and diminished value.
  • Cost estimate: Quick estimate for minor damage under €1,000.
  • Valuation report: For sales or insuring classic and modern classics.
  • Evidence preservation report: For disputed damage or litigation.

What does a vehicle assessment cost?

Costs depend on damage amount and vehicle value and are usually between €250 and €1,500. For no-fault accidents the opposing liability insurance covers these costs 100% — you pay nothing. This rule is established by BGH case law.

Who may create vehicle assessments?

Only state-recognised or certified experts — for example from TÜV, DEKRA or as independent experts certified under DIN EN ISO/IEC 17024. All Easy Gutachter partners are verified and work to these standards.

Important: For no-fault traffic accidents in Germany, under § 249 BGB you are entitled to your own expert of your choice. You do not have to rely on the opposing insurer's assessment.

Cost coverage

What does the report cost? Usually: nothing.

For no-fault accidents, according to the BGH you are entitled to commission your own expert — the opposing liability insurance covers 100% of the costs.

No-fault accident

100% reimbursed

Opposing liability insurance pays everything — report, repair, rental car, loss of use.

Comprehensive claim

Free advice

Your comprehensive insurance usually commissions the assessor itself. We advise you anyway.

Partial fault

Proportionally reimbursed

Costs are reimbursed proportionally to the fault ratio. Your assessor clarifies the details.

Damage types

Which damages do we cover?

Whether rear-end collision, wildlife damage or vandalism — our verified vehicle experts create legally secure reports for every type of damage.

Liability damage (no-fault)

Classic rear-end collision, right-of-way violation or lane change — the opposing insurance covers all costs incl. report, rental car and loss of use.

Comprehensive damage

Self-inflicted damage, theft, storm damage. Fully comprehensive insurance usually commissions its own assessors — we advise you independently.

Wildlife accident

Collision with deer, wild boar or stag. Partial comprehensive pays — we help with claims settlement and confirmation via the wildlife certificate.

Glass damage

Stone chip, splinter or windscreen breakage. Partial comprehensive covers it — the assessor checks whether repair suffices or replacement is needed.

Vandalism & parking bumps

Damage while parked, hit-and-run or wilful destruction. We document the damage evidentially for insurance and police.

Total loss & theft

Economic or technical total loss. We determine replacement value, residual value and diminished value — comprehensibly documented.

Frequently asked questions

What victims ask most often.

Do I have to pay the assessor?
For no-fault accidents: No. The opposing liability insurance covers the costs 100% — confirmed by the highest court (BGH).
How quickly do I get an assessor?
Callback usually within 2 hours. On-site appointment mostly within 48 hours.
Can I choose my assessor freely?
Yes. For no-fault accidents you have free choice of assessor — regardless of the insurer's recommendation.
What do I need for the damage report?
Name, phone, postcode and a short description are enough. Vehicle details and photos can be captured on-site by the assessor.
What if I'm at fault myself?
We also help with comprehensive or partial-fault cases. Your assessor clarifies cost coverage with you in advance.
Is my data safe?
Absolutely. SSL-encrypted and forwarded exclusively to your assigned assessor.
What does a vehicle assessment cost?
Costs depend on damage amount and vehicle value (between €250 and €1,500). For no-fault accidents the opposing insurance covers these costs in full.
When is my own report worth it instead of a cost estimate?
From a damage amount of approx. €1,000 (minor damage threshold) a full damage report is worth it — it includes diminished value, replacement value and residual value, which a simple cost estimate does not cover.
Do I need a lawyer in addition to the assessor?
Not necessarily, but recommended. For no-fault accidents the opposing insurance also covers lawyer's fees — a lawyer ensures the legally secure enforcement of your claims.
